Road Trip 5 A Couple of Batty Incidents

On the first day with Jame, returning from shopping, we encountered a small parade playing loud Issan music. As usual my feet couldn't remain still and we stopped to see what it was all about.

It was a cellbration for a young man who was "going to Buddha" to become a monk. All his friends were out to give him a party and take him to the Wat. The silly farang couldn't help but join in the fun. I was welcomed by all and offered a very strong straight whiskey to drink.

It was great sanook and I soon dipped into my pocket to contribute to this special occasion. Amazing Thailand to be sure!

About 5:00 pm that evening a bunch piled into the truck to go and see the bats. The cave was about a 10 minute drive from Jame's house. It was a a spectacular cliff in a park-like setting. There was a snack bar that Neung and James raided immediately then we sat down and waited for 5:45 when the bats were guaranteed to appear.

They were wrong. It was 5:44 when the bats began exiting the cave. In the next 15 minutes millions of bats formed an undulating stream as they flew out across the countryside devouring mosquitoes on their way. It was an absolutely impressive display even though I had seen videos of it on youtube.
